How to Make Snow Ice

Strawberry Snow Ice

Snow Ice is unique because of its fluffy consistency and this is what sets it apart from other types of shaved ice or snow cones. But to make snow ice properly you need to have the right ingredients, a proper recipe, the correct freezing technique and the right shavers.  In this tutorial we’ll share some of the best snow ice recipes and methods so that you can make delicious snowflake ice!

Snow Ice Recipe

When it comes to making snow ice, you have three options:

  1. A pre-made flavored powder
  2. A base powder that you add your own flavors or fresh fruit to
  3. A homemade recipe using your own ingredients

Snow Ice Powders

The easiest option is to use a pre-made Snow Ice Powder. All you need to do is mix the ingredients with water (or milk), freeze them and you’re good to go.

Snow Ice Powder typically comes in bags that weigh 2.2lbs (1kg) and can make 25lbs of snow ice (5lbs x 5 Large Ice Blocks).

Popular Snow Ice Powders include:

  • Mango
  • Chocolate
  • Strawberry
  • Matcha
  • Taro
  • Base Powder

Snow Ice Base Powder

The next option is to use a base powder that you will add your own flavors to. This usually consists of taking the base powder, mixing it with milk and fresh fruit, and then blending the whole concoction together.

This is a great option if you want to have the convenience of a pre-made powder but also want to customize your flavors and use some natural ingredients.

The third option is to make Snow Ice using all of your own ingredients. This generally involves experimenting with milk, a sweetner (sugar, condensed milk or a no-calorie sweetener), and fresh fruit.

This option takes the most work but is ideal for store owners who want to offer their customers the freshest and most natural ingredients.

How to Freeze Snow Ice

Now that you have your snow ice ingredients and recipe, you need a way to freeze your snow ice blocks and the technique that you use will depend on which type of Snow Ice Shaver you’re using.

Single Serve Ice Blocks

Single Serve Snow Ice Shavers use smaller ice blocks that can be made in reusable plastic ice molds and then frozen in a regular kitchen freezer.

They come in 7oz (200g) and 17.5oz (500g) sizes and you will shave the entire amount in one serving so there isn’t any need to store the ice block in-between customers.

Large Ice Blocks

Large Ice Blocks are about 5.5″ x 5.5″ and need to be frozen in a freezer that can reach at least -13° F (-25° C).  These generally can’t be frozen in a regular freezer and need either a modern chest freezer that can consistently reach low temperatures or a specialized snow ice freezer.
